Polysics, MySpace Records, Devo Love

Here’s how to get my attention publicity people…send me a vinyl double gatefold album of the good stuff and I will pay attention. I guarantee it. MySpace Records did just that last month sending me the double vinyl package of the albums ‘We Ate The Machine’ and ‘Karate House’ by the Japanese, Devo-influenced outfit, Polysics. I’ve been spinning it happily and today the CD version of ‘We Ate The Machine’ arrived in the mail so you can listen to the MP3 below and I can play a track this Thursday on the Pampelmoose New Music Hour show on Portland’s KNRK 94.7FM. Win, win.

Oh, wow, really? Is that all it takes? Sheesh. That’s a very anti-indie bias you’ve got there. When you’re already an internationally-known band on a major label (Sony Japan/Myspace Records), that kind of swag is no big deal, but most bands are lucky to be able to do a CD. Maybe you haven’t looked into how much it costs to produce quality vinyl these days (or quality anything!) but it’s not cheap. Should I interpret your comments to mean that you exclude bands from your notice who don’t have major label backing? Or would you like to clarify your position on what exactly “gets your attention”?

@Mike, I forgot that we’ve witnessed the end of irony since 9/11. If you believe that everything I’ve written here for the last two years is “anti-indie” then lordy, all I can say is you haven’t been paying attention.
You say “most bands are lucky to be able to do a CD” well hey, news blast, I don’t want your CD and I doubt neither do thousands of other folks!! I want vinyl and an MP3. Save on the CD, press vinyl. I’ll put my money where my mouth is - if you have an album’s worth of material worth pressing to vinyl I will split the cost with you - i.e. the difference between pressing CDs and a vinyl record…. Deal?
Meanwhile what gets my attention is everything that gets my attention…..I’m the judge of that…

Ew. Too many Myspace scene hair-don’ts, Polysics.
