howard wolfson, music, politics and the moose

Gotham Acme

In one of those random and yet surgically precise ways I electronically met Howard Wolfson yesterday. Wolfson was Communications Director for Hillary Clinton’s 2008 presidential campaign and is currently continuing his career as a political commentator for Fox News. He also runs a music blog, Gotham Acme, that I learned about by reading an article at LA Times.com. We shared email yesterday and I discovered that Howard is a big fan of both my band Gang of Four and The Clash.

Reading his blog got me thinking - How do we mingle art and politics in a blog? At first I thought that the mixture was too jarring with pictures of Hillary and Obama and video of Howard in his role as a Fox commentator alongside his posts about music, such as being at the South African band BLK JKS show in Brooklyn. [BTW Blk Jks sound great, check their MySpace] And there in his blogroll are links to Stereogum and LargeHeartedBoy. Clearly he has a passion for music and his communication and political skills have propelled him along nicely. He falls neatly into the role of influencer in both of those fields.

Maybe it’s time for me to do the same. Let me know. Or start yelling about how art and politics should be kept separate [I'll never agree with you.]

You should talk about politics. First with your history with Gang of Four I know during the 80’s when I was in University I looked toward the music that they created and along with the Clash, Bob Marley, and countless other bands for inspiration during the Reagan years. As this campaign moves forward to November the truth gets blurred. Only through art and a community of like minded people clarity can be achieved.
Anyhow the following was forwarded to me from a news group I belong to from people who hung out at Trenton City Garden in the 80’s (not sure if you played there with the Gang of Four) but it was a great place back then. So who knows how true the following is but it makes one think

Governor Palin’s] oldest girl is rumored to have actually been the one who had the last baby, the one with Down’s Syndrome. She was taken out of school the last 4 or 5 months of her mother’s pregnancy.

On March 5th, 2008 Alaska’s Republican Governor, Sarah Palin, announced to the media that she was 7 months pregnant with her 5th child. She is currently 44.

Palin’s daughter Bristol is 16 and attends an Anchorage high school. Students who have attended class with her report that she has been out of school for months, claiming a prolonged case of mono.

Palin does not appear pregnant in any recent photographs. The announcement came as quite a shock to people who had worked closely with her, and have been quoted as saying that she did not appear pregnant whatsoever during the prior 7 months.

That story has been debunked but the real story is that her 17 year old daughter Bristol Palin is pregnant.

As for mixing in politics to this blog I think I will wait until we drop a new look on the Moose, basically an image overhaul that will bring more room for different columns and columnists. Hopefully this fall and prior to the election.
