Summer Reading List, 2008

Jessy loves books.

It’s that time again, time for my annual Summer Reading List, and this year’s is the biggest yet. As always, I asked several of my friends and colleagues for their recommendations — including newcomers Daniel Pinchbeck, Steve Aylett, Ian MacKaye, Mike Daily, Paul Saffo, Gareth Branwyn, Rodger Bridges, and Peter Lunenfeld, as well as return contributors Erik Davis, Richard Metzger, Mark Pesce, Alex Burns, Paul D. Miller a.k.a. DJ Spooky, Brian Tunney, Patrick Barber, Steven Shaviro, Ashley Crawford, Cynthia Connolly, Gary Baddeley, and The Moose himself.

Check it out.

@Roy—that’s one thing I don’t see much chatter about here (aside from the recent price of gas post) but would LOVE to kickstart a discussion on. The economy is crap. What effect is it having on the bands? As in, what personal experiences are groups like BEDM and Menomena, and the P-Moose having in our current conditions? Where I am at, things in the music/indie culture scene don’t look like they are slowing much….YET. But for how long? The shiny disc’s demise is no doubt hastened by the price of fuel, but how long til the shows themselves start hurting? Maybe elsewhere they are hurting already.

Things here (southeast Alabama) are so dead as far as touring bands, that I wouldn’t know either. It’s the other end of the spectrum from up there. The closest anyone has ever come to this area is about two and a half hours away (Tallahassee, FL), and sometimes three (Birmingham, AL), but usually if you want to see anyone, you’re in for a five-hour trip to Atlanta. That’s just how it’s always been here (I went to high school and undergrad here).

With that said, I can’t tell if the tours are slowing because I’m attending about s many as I ever have here (very few).
