internet-powered musicians

I am often asked by budding rock stars “but how do I make money on the internet?” Gerd Leonard has posted a simple 5 minute overview of his thoughts on YouTube. In very simple terms he points out the way that the internet is disrupting the record companies’ business and how you, budding rock star, can use it to your advantage.

I definitely do agree with Gerd’s points. Lately, I have expressed the need for artists/writers to have some sort of Agent, something very “non-traditional” because the old “checklist” way of making money in the music industry is no longer an option. You end up giving more before you get and the “get” part for one artist might be completely different for another, but the problem is that some of these traditional thinkers are trying to collect at each “traditional checkpoint” and not looking at the overall financial picture and sometimes even hurting their future opportunities. I mean look at black kids. From the looks of it, its as if someone overly aware of their opportunities is hanging out in the background telling them what to do, cuz they sure do have it down, not to mention their music doesnt suck, which helps :)
