songbird, a desktop media player mashed-up with the web

Songbird hq, spot the DJ…..
I never know how I come across cool apps such as Songbird but this one may have arrived via Josh Spear. You may note that I’ve posted the Songbird link to the left - that’s right, the cute bird logo over there! If, like me, you enjoy scouring the web for MP3s that are posted by folks who don’t mind you listening to or downloading their music then you’re in luck. When you download and open Songbird up it will ask you if you would like to import all your MP3s into the app - any MP3s not just your iTunes folder. You can escape the hegemony of iTunes with this thing. You will also notice the nav bar and if you type in the Pampelmoose address the window will open the Moose homepage and below that window all the MP3s I’ve posted are populated for your streaming and listening pleasure. If you like what you hear you can download the MP3. Now pop on over to Gorilla vs Bear for instance and you get more of the same….pretty damn fine, I’m sold. Sorry Peel…

this is a pretty exciting concept. literally “playing” a web site really shifts the mentality from browsing to tuning in.
with that said the product is in beta so it should get more stable as time goes on….

I think the product is actually Alpha! Still in development phase but available for us foolhardy souls to mess with. How about this….Amazon has all the labels now with DRM-free files, Songbird is a great solution for playing those files and more….so maybe for me anyway, goodbye iTunes….?

songbird is cool for playing tracks listed on web sites, but i’ll still rely on itunes to manage my music library and devices.

@josh
Songbird handles all of your music for you too. The only thing it doesn’t do is sync your devices.

Actually the best thing really is the ability for Moose readers to stream all of our MP3s easily…..

Actually it does sync your devices… it currently supports iPods, and with the upcoming 0.5 release it will support MTP devices on Windows.
