[...] I lean heavily toward electronic music and dub but I have a passion for a good old-fashioned singer songwriter song too. Let’s call it the ying and the yang. For instance last night my pal D Funk and I went to see Robbie Fulks, a man who who is true to his roots. According to Wikipedia - “Fulks is known for his disdain of mainstream modern country and the country music industry, as exemplified by his scorching rebuke of Nashville titled “Fuck This Town.” His live performances feature improvised rearrangments of his original songs, off-the-cuff musical humor, and covers of songs by Michael Jackson and Cher, among others.” He was a little too chipper for me last night but his in between songs banter was hilarious. And then last week Claire from the Beggars Music Group sent me a package that included an album from Basia Bulat (it also included a screener of Heima, the brilliant movie from Sigur Ros, more on that later.) I had never heard of Ms Bulat but hearing her soaring voice and amazing instrumentation I felt compelled to let you hear a track. Although she is a little too pop for me and doesn’t carry the gravitas or Alt-rock roots of say, Neko Case, a fellow Canadian chanteuse, she can certainly put her voice to work. Have a listen below and check out her video here. [...]

You could do worse...though the nightlife doesn't even START til midnight. They like to go til unholy hours over there. Still, a Viking Lager in each hand is not a bad way to spend the evening.

Dave, cheers for the Save Iceland link. I lived there for two years back in 1999-2001. It was indeed something to see, especially Reykjavik in winter...I had no idea industry was so royally dorking things up over there. A shame, as it's one of the few places left that seemed to be untouched by much of that. Ahhh, well...Kurt Vonnegut said it best, and I paraphrase--We could have fixed it, but we were too lazy. And too cheap.
