the cribs, a review…

Any band that can manage to get the kids at Doug Fir to do more than nod their heads from back behind the bar is impressive in my book. Wakefield’s cool nerdy kids The Cribs may have received both brutal and hailing reviews from indie taste-makers across the globe since their debut album was released in 2005, but even former tour-mate Stephen Malkmus was seen tapping his foot at the Doug Fir. The brothers Jarman worked through “pop/post punk/rock” tunes like “Men’s Need’s, “Mirror Kissers”, and the more than painfully ironic “Hey Scenesters”, for a nearly sold out crowd at the Doug Fir on Friday night. I was won over by their jerky guitar riffs, slick drum beats, and undeniably catchy ditties. Their awkward, slurry in-between song banter revealed that they were either British, or just drunk, but I’m inclined to think it was a bit of both. From one musical snob to another, I was surprised to discover that the Cribs actually are good, they write clever songs, and they just might win the hearts of musical snobs across the country.

Dave, are there a lot of Jarmans in England, because I don’t know any over here. My dad is a Brit (he’s from Leicester—go foxes), and after hearing of this band I wondered if perhaps I was related to the Cribs. And since the one dude is living here, I thought maybe us Jarmans ought to meet.

You know the only Jarman I knew until I heard of the Cribs was you Casey! I have a message in to the Crib Jarman that lives here and when I hear back we should all go sink a pint together an get caught up. Are you trying to trace your genomes?
