94.7 fm offers up tons of local music via hd radio
Portland’s 94.7 FM is probably the best station in town if you measure radio stations by how much they support local music and local artists. They’ve now launched their new-fangled HD radio channels, and no, that HD does not stand for Hi Def like your TV - confused? Go to their site and check out what HD is all about. Here’s the 94.7 blurb “You told us MORE LOCAL MUSIC and we have responded! In fact we have created a whole new Radio Station that only plays Northwest Bands! Please Welcome ‘94/7 too - Independent Radio’ our first HD channel. Yes, you will need an HD Radio to listen on a regular basis, but for now, you can stream 94/7 too by clicking on the Listen Live button in the middle of the homepage at 947.fm”

its funny that even though the transmission is digital and goes through an analog carrier, there doesnt seem to be any recorvery of “digital audio transmission” roylaties by soundexchange. but since the broadcast is simulcast online, the station or stations pay for the transmission because of the online digital transmission.

Yay! fire up my Boston Acoustics Recepter! 94.7 already had an HD2 channel called “subterranean”…i think it was live pop/rock from what i remember… looks like that is history.
fyi… the HD means “hybrid digital”

Actually, since its fun to be contrary, HD does not stand for anything according to Ibiquity that owns the rights to the product. It use to be short for “hybrid digital”, now its short for nothing.

my pair of copper pennies: i think it’s pretty funny (and appropriate) that the “HD” in “HD radio” doesn’t officially mean anything then, and gone to marketing/branding limbo. I’m tired of seeing the term “high definition” or “HD” used to sell anything today. Like the O’s “high definition” news they launched a few years back, or ads for Windex that claims to get your windows “high-definition” clean. High Definition is a TV standard, dammit!. Unless the product is an ATSC-compatible 1920×1080 display (or image), “HD” doesn’t belong on the box or bottle.
