Midlake hail from Denton, TX which, according to the UK newspaper The Guardian, is a god-forsaken place. You can read all about it here. And here’s an excerpt from that piece that describes Midlake’s sound - “…one of those records you feel like you’ve known for ever; a dreamy concoction of Neil Young, Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty and The Yardbirds, mixing together 1970s MOR, harmonies dripping with honey, and lyrics about young brides, stonecutters and mountaineers. It’s music that seems to have emerged fully formed from another time and another place.”

I’m very excited about this. “Roscoe” was my favorite song of 2006.

This is the most interesting and musically talented group to come out of DFW in a long time! These guys are all formally trained, schooled in jazz and they are making some really good rock-n-roll unlike anything else that’s out there. The Trials of Van Occupanther was the best album by anyone in 2006.

Another GREAT Denton group to watch is Mission Giant. These guys are long-time fixtures in that scene and are hella fun to watch. One show they did wearing Chef outfits. Visually speaking, it was soy sauce for the soul. Sonically, it was a combination of too much nutmeg and a triple vodka tonic.
