jenny tatone on my teenage stride
Today I’d like to welcome Jenny Tatone as a contributor to the Moose blog. You can find Jenny’s work all over the ‘net - most recently at Neumu and on her Mog page. Look for more regular posts from her as she’s a good read and knows her music…go Jenny..
Listening to My Teenage Stride, I can only think of one thing: the notorious Silence of the Lambs scene, wherein the cannibal hides his, um, manhood between his legs and spreads his arms like wings before the mirror. As he reveled in his femininity, I listened to the excellent ‘80s track playing behind him, desperate to peg it; after months of searching, I never could (it didn’t appear on the soundtrack). Now, more than a decade later, the haunting dance mood has reappeared courtesy of multi-instrumentalist Jedediah Smith a.k.a. My Teenage Stride. Jedediah’s new album, Ears Like Golden Bats, recalls, to me, Pretty in Pink, David Bowie, and The Wedding Present yet, somehow, it manages to not feel like a retro throwback. On first listen I was certain this was a reissue from an ‘80s new wave/pop group I’d never heard of but, alas, it’s just some dude in Brooklyn who has a real knack for dark Brit-pop melodies, tinkering, brain-eating keys and classic ‘80s rubber-band dance beats. Well done, good sir.
