sonic youth backstage at minehead
The ATP Nightmare Before Christmas show in Minehead, England last weekend was what can only be described as a real blast. There is something fascinating about these events to me; young people still turn out in droves to see a strong live bill obviously, especially when there’s 53 bands on that bill, but to snap up all those tickets three months in advance shows you the power of the live concert as a shared, communal experience that will outlive CDs and downloads for ever. It was a pleasure to perform this event. Here’s some video I shot of Sonic Youth working on a song prior to their Saturday night performance.

I was not involved in the writing or recording of I Love A Man In A Uniform as by then I’d formed Shriekback, and consequently whenever we’ve tried to play it live it sounds to me as if it’s too stilted and never ‘in the pocket’ rhythmically-speaking. Here we are backstage in Istanbul giving it the semi-unplugged version - we didn’t play it on stage that night anyway….
