The New York Times reported that James Brown, the singer, songwriter, bandleader and dancer who indelibly transformed 20th-century music, died early Christmas Day in Atlanta. Portland movie director Gus Van Sant was arrested Thursday for driving under the influence of intoxicants, police reported today.
