lawrence williams remembered feat. nancy king

lawrence williams

Dwight Adams, trumpet, kicked by Lawrence Williams.

Tim DuRoche writes “this all-star evening pays tribute to the recently departed Detroit jazz legend Lawrence Williams, a nonpareil composer and drummer who lived in Portland for many years. A dear friend to vocalist Nancy King (another without-peer jazz sensation), and a mentor to many, Williams leaves a magisterial legacy that goes back to the good old days of Detroit, when GM was still cranking out flathead V8s and giants like the Jones boys (Elvin, Thad and Hank), Pepper Adams and Milt Jackson still roamed the earth. King joins an excellent cadre of jazz talent (led by saxophonist David Valdez) to salute Williams’ sophisticated, full-throttle, bop-tinged oeuvre.” Jimmy Maks Friday Nov 17th. 8 pm. $8. 21+.
