Katie Couric leads the charge against competitors Brian Williams of NBC and ABC’s Charles Gibson to win the coveted top spot for the most viewers of the network’s evening news slot. Like the print media companies, the networks have seen nothing but decline in news viewership over the decades, a decline that has been spurred by the ability of viewers to grab all the news they need in quick bites from cable and the internet. Couric is quoted as saying that “she will assume that many viewers have already scanned the headlines of the day, giving her license to jettison some stories entirely or to dispense with others in a digest.” She apparently understands where her audience is coming from.
