pickathon roots music festival this weekend

avett brothers

If you consider rock music to still be in the doldrums (as I do) then there’s something to be had by latching on to those three crazy guys from North Carolina known as the Avett Brothers. Four Thieves Gone, their latest album, is a wonderful frenzied sonic assault with just the right mix of wry humour and excellent musicianship that it would give any trendy so-called alt rock band a run for its money. And don’t take my word for it - “The latest studio album from the rough-and-ready North Carolina trio; Four Thieves Gone is a crazy-ass acoustic, folk-rock tour de force that is the “the best Avett Brothers album yet,” says Geoffrey Himes of The Washington Post.”

The Avett Brothers will be appearing with Iris Dement, Greg Brown and the Wailin’ Jennys - just a few names on a stellar line up - at the Eighth Annual Pickathon Roots Music Festival in Portland this weekend. For more information go to the Pickathon web site. And here’s an article on how the festival is practising sustainability this year.
Pickathon Friday August 4th and Saturday August 5th. Noon until late. Camping available. Day or weekend tickets available.

[...] After being bumped from Hornings Hideout last year and then moving into Pudding River we decided that we still needed a better site for the Pickathon Roots Music Festival this year. We feel we’ve finally found a home that could become permanent - Pendarvis Farm, a location that is in the Portland Metro area and yet it’s location in Happy Valley, with Mt Hood as the backdrop to the stage this year, couldn’t be more bucolic. This year’s line up is spectacular and includes Iris Dement, Greg Brown, Danny Barnes and Kelly Joe Phelps to name a few as well as my favorites, The Avett Brothers. The site is phenomenal with tons of camping in the forest, plenty of room for RV’s and tons of day parking for those that don’t want to camp out for the weekend. Our selection of vendors this year exceeds last so we feel we have everything covered when it comes to food, drinks and other amenities. Once again we have two stages but unlike previous years we are running later on Saturday night as we can move indoors to a third stage in a barn with a bar for those of you 21 and over. Some advance tickets are still available through Pickathon.com but there will be ample tickets available at the gate. [...]
