I’ve always had a fascination for Michael Mann’s movies. As the New York Times review of his latest effort Miami Vice points out his films are operatic in scale. Back in 1995 Al Pacino out “Al Pacino’d” himself by getting a little too hysterical in Heat but somehow Mann kept a firm hand on the rudder and in almost 3 hours rolled out a finely woven tale of LA gangsters ( as in the old school criminals) going head to head with the so-called good guys, the LAPD. And Mann’s Manhunter was a much better film than Silence of the Lambs, of which Manhunter was a sort of prequel. To be honest I’m not sure that Miami Vice the film really need to be made but as been pointed out, who better to make it than Michael Mann.
