The first time I came across Luomo was when I downloaded his remix of Special Cases by Massive Attack featuring Sinead O’Connor, back in 2003; a rather smooth and sublime mix that offset the sometimes bulky mixes that Massive Attack are prone to deliver. This weekend I actually went into a record store; Music Millennium’s electronic section is always worth a glance and this time I read a ’staff recommendation’ for a disc that Luomo released in 2004 entitled ‘The Present Lover.’ Those of you who know Luomo by his aliases Conoco, Sistol, Uusitalo and Vladislav Delay or even his real name, Sasu Ripatti, will know that he delivers the deepest of smooth, comfy beats, more hypnotic and soft than driving and pummeling, that pulsate through your head. Fine layers of synthesizers provide a bare, thin but warm, blanket of accompaniment. And here on the title track, The Present Lover, languid vocals. Click play.
