Katherine Parr
September 2005. A trip back to my home town is a rare event these days. Kendal in Cumbria, formerly known as Westmoreland, a northern England wool town, was known for its famous wool dye the much sought after ‘Kendal Green.’ The castle perched on a hill in the centre of town, known not unsurprisingly as Kendal Castle, was the home of Queen Katherine
Parr the only queen of Henry VIII to outlive him. She was the daughter of Sir Thomas Parr of Kendal and Maud Greene; Katharine was the eldest of three children, born probably in 1512, followed the next year by her brother William and a year later by her sister Anne. Sir Thomas and Maud were courtiers during the early years of Henry VIII’s reign. The castle, built by Sir Thomas, has been renovated over the years and is a surprisingly peaceful place to sit and ponder the discomforts of making a home in a castle.
