I spent a very pleasant summer evening at Edgefield last night watching and listening to a couple of my favorite bands – Menomena and TV On The Radio. After the show I spent some time chatting with Kyp Malone, Dave Sitek and Tunde Adebimpe. Me and Tunde (above) found ourselves discussing the vagaries of online music, especially streaming services. I’m hoping he can find the time to join my panel at the next SFMusicTech summit in September where we could take our conversation public.

Not exactly my best-in-music-in-2010 list just an end of year ramble..let’s start with Rob’s tweet and an excerpt from my pal Roy’s end of year musings.

@Rob_Sonic

K last gripe on it, when the people directly responsible for devaluation of music, dictate who is best at it, quality is unimportant
Everything’s amazing and nobody’s happy @roychristopher
“Verse of the year: Nicky Minaj on “Monster.” This seven-minute posse jam includes Jay-Z, Kanye, Rick Ross, and Bon Iver (for whatever reason), but Nicky’s sixteen makes them all look straight silly. As good as this album is, hers here is easily the best verse on the whole thing.“

I spent the year mainly reading and writing and worrying about digital strategy…. I never really considered what was going on in music. I found it hard to focus on music, what with the distraction of the always-on-web hacking at the heft and haw of my daily activities, spent mainly in front of a monitor of some description.
I did find time to look back over the year and decided that the new Kanye West album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy really did it for me, and Sleigh Bells ‘Treats’ was a fabulously noisy album that I enjoyed too. (In fact ‘Treats’ confirmed for me that now, more than ever, young kids bring the rock by not getting caught up in the cerebral.) Talking of cerebral – Brian Eno stepped out into the absurd by interviewing himself in the Dick Flash Interview. Everyone else seemed to be in rapture about the new Arcade Fire album, an album that left me cold.
My findings: young kids thrashing on guitars and electronics make the best rock. Old guys thrashing on electronics with a touch of analog and a lot of cerebral make the best fun of themselves, while making a great album for grown ups that will disturb those grown ups. The Arcade Fire continue to mine Bruce Springsteen’s catalog for ideas.
Anyway, I took a look through my iTunes ‘Top 25 Most Played’ list and came up with a 60 minute mix of songs culled from that list which I now present to you in MP3 form. For those who are interested in such things, the artists I didn’t include from the iTunes most played list include Brad Mehldau, Typhoon, Radiohead, John Coltrane, The Cinematic Orchestra, Sun Ra and Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry. An aside: What would be the word we’d use to replace mixtape when the collection is all MP3s and not on tape?
Click to play the 2010 year end mixtape. Right click/Control click to download the zip file [File size 99MB]
You can find the playlist artists and all the separate MP3s here.
