Shipbreaking

I found an amazing photo essay about ship breaking in Bangladesh. At first glance it seems incredibly wrong that giant super tankers are dismantled on beautiful beaches but as you read through the captions you understand that it is not all bad.

Scooter

When I first moved to Oregon in 2000 I thought that the Suburu wagon was a standard issue vehicle – they were everywhere. Given the average Oregonian’s proclivity for outdoors pursuits an all-wheel drive, off-road vehicle made sense. Then along came the gas price crunch with prices hovering around $3 a gallon, (which, let’s face it, is still cheaper than a latte any day) and now everywhere I look I see the Toyota Prius – a hybrid car, part gas, part electric. Americans are clearly hedging their bets against a gallon of gas ever returning to the ludicrously low levels of about a $1.30 last seen about two years ago, by buying more energy efficient vehicles. This is a good start although moving to cleaner, more environmentally sound forms of energy for our transportation needs could use a serious jump start and would be helped a great deal if the current administration had the guts to stand up to the oil companies.

Meanwhile, here in Portland, we like to do things our own way. We’ve embraced the scooter, especially those lovely, curvy Italian Lambrettas of old. Portlanders prove that you can save the earth and be stylish. Visit Portland’s Scooter Station for more info.
