It’s unfortunate, that in a world of major economic problems, wars being fought on many fronts, oil drilling companies wrecking the Gulf Of Mexico’s ecosystem, pop music’s only agit-pop totem is a woman who is conflicted on many counts. A woman who attempts to reflect the current zeitgeist through her ‘politically’ charged lyrics whilst living in the up-scale Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles, engaged to Ben Brewer, aka Benjamin Zachary Bronfman, son of Warner Music Group CEO Edgar Bronfman Jr. and heir to the Seagram fortune. She even claims that the CIA monitors or invented Google! Nice going.
Jessica Hopper reviews M.I.A.’s new album /\/\ /\ Y /\ and takes her to task in this very insightful review – Making Pop For Capitalist Pigs.

I can see your point of view feeling that she is a hypocrite or ungrateful in some way. However if you look into her past she had a VERY difficult life. She sings political songs cause politics deeply affected her and her family as well as her people in Sri Lanka. There is a long time civil war in Sri Lanka that is bloody. I mean I could go into further detail about how she rarely got to see her father cause of him being an activist and her and her mother having to out run the army and becoming refugees in the U.K. or you could just read up on it yourself :)
