Thrones – Saturday, December 19th @ Artistery
Bassist extraordinaire Joe Preston has amassed a resume as mighty as the sound he ekes out of his amplifiers. The Salem resident has worked with some of the titans of heavy rock and drone, including a stint with Melvins and session/tour work with High On Fire, Harvey Milk, Sunn 0))), Earth and Godheadsilo. Playing under the name Thrones, Preston lays down a one-man all-out aural assault that features him pulling out long low tones from his bass or playing along with a pounding drum machine. I recommend getting up close and feeling the full brunt of this attack on your person. I can only hope your internal organs can absorb that much sonic energy.
Duniya Dance & Drum Company – Saturday, December 19th @ Someday Lounge
Hailing from San Francisco, this troupe of dancers and musicians are being brought up here by DJ Anjali & The Incredible Kid, the DJ pair that specializes in Bollywood and Indian dance music. The dancers of Duniya – led by former Portland resident Joti Singh – are promising a panoply of dancing styles, including traditional Bhangra, Bollywood-inspired work, and modern interpretations set to tunes from Trinidad and beyond. Also on tap will be dancing and music from West Africa, courtesy of their resident percussionist Alpha Oumar “Bongo” Sidibe.
I Know, I Know – Tuesday, December 22nd @ Ella St. Social Club
Reminiscent of the lo-fi ramblings of Beat Happening, this young trio play the bare minimum when it comes to guitar lines and drum beats, sounding as if they could topple apart with the slightest cross wind. What keeps them standing is the impressively sexy vocals of Nicole and Rina, the two women in the group. They don’t force themselves into the songs, but instead rest in the half-light provided by the music and exposing themselves just enough to get you leaning in for a closer look. It’s deceptively fragile and coquettish, and impossible to shake off after just one listen.
