Pampelmoose Picks For The Week Of October 9th

Monsters Of Folk

Monsters Of Folk – Wednesday, October 14th @ Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall
If you have yet to hear about this all-star project pictured, you obviously don’t get online too frequently. The music blogs and news sites have been ablaze with pixels in the service of this new supergroup that features the indie icons Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes), Matt Ward, Jim James (My Morning Jacket) and producer Mike Mogis. Their self-titled album is an alternately rousing and intimate collection of rock and folk that mashes together the various aesthetics that each artist brings to the table, and will surely be on many a writer’s top 10 list by the end of the year.

CONTEST: If you and a friend would like to go see the Monsters in concert this coming Wednesday, Pampelmoose and Thrasher Presents have a pair of tickets to give away to the show. All you have to do is leave a comment to this post telling us why you are the most deserving person to go to this show. Also, make sure that the e-mail address you leave is valid as that will be our way to contact you and let you know that you’ve won (this information will remain confidential). Contest ends at NOON (Pacific Time) on Monday, October 12th so don’t hesitate to get your entry in.

Damon & Naomi – Monday, October 12th @ Doug Fir Lounge
Although this duo will always be associated with Galaxie 500, the band that brought their intricate playing to the public consciousness, Damon Krukowski and Naomi Yang have spent the years since that group’s demise cultivating their own unique psych-folk and have released seven dreamy albums under their own names. Four of these discs were put out by Sub Pop and the choicest tracks from the bunch have been collected on a new release, appropriately titled The Sub Pop Years (this compilation is coming out on D&N’s own 20/20/20 imprint). The songs found on it all have that late Summer’s eve in the wilderness feel, that delicious warmth that seems to seep out of your skin right before the sun goes down.

The Raincoats – Tuesday, October 13th @ Holocene
The legacy of The Raincoats, at least here in the U.S., will always be associated with the Northwest music explosion of the mid-’90s thanks to Kurt Cobain. His glowing love for the band resulted in the group’s three studio albums being reissued on Nirvana’s label and inspired two of the original members to record an album together in 1996. But for the rest of the world, The Raincoats are indelibly linked with the U.K. post-punk scene that generated dozens of small boutique record labels and dozens of new bands, the influences of which are still being felt today. This all-girl outfit, led by Ana De Silva and Gina Birch, stood out from their fellow Rough Trade pack thanks to a unique sound that turned pop tropes inside out. They hit the reference points that many young bands at the time were (reggae, dub, punk, pop, world beat) but batted them around like a ball of yarn. The result was a scratchy, rumbling but deliriously catchy sound that featured plenty of scratchy violin and bounding rhythms. Since their reunion, the group has performed off and on over the years – mostly events like the Robert Wyatt-curated Meltdown in 2001 – but haven’t done a proper tour in at least a decade. Inspired or perhaps encouraged by the re-release of their 1979 debut on Kill Rock Stars, The Raincoats are making a quick jaunt through the U.S. including their first ever Portland appearance this coming Tuesday.
