SMMR BMMR – Friday through Sunday @ Rotture (315 SE 3rd Ave) & BC’s Saloon (2433 SE Powell)
If you’ve noticed a fuzzier, uglier tone creeping into the world of garage rock, punk and pop these days, you’re not imagining things. Even as GarageBand, ProTools and countless other computer programs allow for a cleaner, sleeker sound for demos and recordings, the inverse has been bubbling up from the underground with bands proudly using their handheld cassette recorders, 4-tracks and other lo-fi methods of capturing their raw sound. This three-day festival celebrates this dirty sound with three-dozen bands from throughout the U.S., including the Ramonesian trio Personal And The Pizzas (pictured), local punk duo Pure Country Gold, and the clanging girl pop group Pens.
Moostache – Saturday @ Ella St. Social Club (714 SW 20th Pl)
Led by three brothers, this group plays the kind of laidback pop you would expect to come out of Southern California. Their devil-may-care approach mixes in elements of ’60s-style blues and folk into their buttery pop to great effect. This Portland date marks their first time playing in our fair city and in support of their fine debut album The Body Disagrees.
Kris Jensen Memorial Fund Benefit @ Holocene (1001 SE Morrison)
Earlier this month, Parenthetical Girls keyboardist Rachael Jensen lost her mother in a serious car accident, a collision that also sent her father and two brothers to the ICU. This show and auction has been put together to help allay some of the burden of the medical bills that the Jensen family has incurred as a result of this accident. The $5 – $15 sliding scale cost of admission is a small price to pay for both the bands playing (Yacht, AU, Copy) and for the help you are giving to a family that has supported the Portland music scene.
Joe Pernice – Wednesday @ Doug Fir Lounge (830 E Burnside)
He has already cemented his reputation as one of indie pop’s finest songwriters via his albums with The Pernice Brothers and Scud Mountain Boys, but Joe Pernice can add novelist to his list of accomplishments. In 2003, he staked this claim with his brilliant and haunting contribution to the 33 1/3 book series, Meat Is Murder. He has recently released his second book, the more expansive but lighter in tone It Feels So Good When I Stop. Pernice will be reading from this book, as well as performing songs from its accompanying soundtrack, a collection of tunes referenced in the novel.
