PWRFL Power at Worksound

If Sunday night’s show at Worksound was offered by a travel company, I think the brochure would read something like this: “Out of the snow and hail of the outdoors and into the tundra.” Yep, that was pretty much the name of the game when it came to entering a very chilly Worksound yesterday. Luckily the freezing venue didn’t dampen spirits as the few and the brave huddled together inside the warehouse to catch the 301st set by humorous guitar virtuoso PWRFL Power aka Kazutaka Nomura.

Fresh off a set in Seattle and set to depart for a Japanese tour at 5am the next day, Kaz stood front and center with his electric guitar and twinkle lights spread about on the drum-kit behind him. It seemed as though just about every tune he played stole the place of the song before it as highlight of the night. However, it must be said that a new track about noise music truly outdid itself in humor, insight and accuracy. The icing on the cake? In between song jokey banter from Kaz that was often times just as oddly profound. It definitely served to underline that the music and lyrics he creates are very much in his own voice.

There’s a first time for everything which rang true since it was my first time at the multi-use art space and also my first time catching him live. While it was definitely an experience along the lines of “survival of the fittest,” I came away with rosy cheeks from laughter and somehow hypothermia free!
