PDXLR8R
The electronic/techno/music and culture mag, XLR8R, is the latest in a long line of print mags to drop in on Portland and have their say about the scene. On flipping through the articles I can say that on the whole they’ve done a pretty good job even if they do cover the usual suspects. Yet, like so many other print pubs they fall into the conceited cliché trap of putting all Portlander’s into a box marked ‘Hippie, tribes, musician-coffee-drinkers’ – check it:
“If you live in Portland, you’re probably in a band…or at the very least a member of a tribe: a bike gang, an art collective, a DJ crew, or one of a posse of people who nod and smile over morning coffee. Once a groggy, downtrodden Northwest town [town!? I thought PDX was a city...], the City of Roses has slowly reinvented itself since the early 90’s, replacing apathy and sarcasm with an often manic positivity that actually seems to jive better with its hippie ideals.”
So former apathetic and sarcastic hippie Portlander’s, what do you have to say for yourselves now?
