The New York Times reports that Richard Wright, keyboard player for Pink Floyd, who met Roger Waters and Nick Mason in college and joined their early band, Sigma 6, has died. Along with the late Syd Barrett, the four formed Pink Floyd in 1965. In the early days of Pink Floyd, Wright, along with Barrett, was seen as the group’s dominant musical force.

Richard Wright inspired me to become a keyboard player back in 1973. Dark Side Of The Moon inspired me enormously back then and it still does today everytime I experience it. I have always loved Pink Floyd music and I have played keyboards and 12string in a Pink Floyd tribute band – “PULSE” for the past 12 years. I am absolutely gutted by this very sad news and I haven’t felt grief like this since my father died back in 2002. I am devasted that my hero has gone and I will never realise a lifelong dream of meeting him. Thank you for the music Rick, I will play it for the rest of my days and every performance of The Great Gig In The Sky will be dedicated to you mate. Shine on and Rest In Peace my hero.

Truly one of the greatest of all time! An innovator of cerebral electronic soul music, he took it to another level, and he inspired many of us. His music lives on forever! Peace and Respect.

September 15th, 2008 at 10:03 pmMelodic conversations created by Wright and Gilmour in songs like “Wots uh the Deal” and Echoes are simply exquisite, exemplifying to me the gestalt of incredible souls illuminating peace through music.
We all go, inevitably. I only hope he can hear, somehow, the admiring “thank you!” that so many of us feel in our hearts today. What a gift to have been touched by his melodies, songs, and the memories we have made with them. Thank you for the inspiration and genius and humanity, Richard Wright! Thank you for your gifts! Thank you!
He will TRUELY BE MISSED!!!!!!……….a very SAD day……Very sad.
September 16th, 2008 at 5:43 amI too am gutted by the passing away of a man I have never met but with whom I have lived every day for more than 35 years.
Rick, your music enchanted me and lightened the darker days of my life. It took me to places that I can only describe as beyond extasy.
I echo the sentiments already expressd and I truly hope that you can indeed hear the grateful thanks of those of us who remain.
September 16th, 2008 at 11:02 amI will never forget those gigs at Earls Court in 1980 and ‘81. Nothing ever affected me in the way Floyd’s music did in the seventies and eighties. I never dreamed that all these years on my sons would feel the same. We’ve all lost something very special. RIP and thank you for everything you meant to a whole generation.
September 16th, 2008 at 12:57 pmA very sad, sad day indeed.
I am CRYING Rick. You will be sorely missed.
Although you left on the full moon you will Shine On & On.
Such an inspiration.
Respect always.
Enjoy your Great Gig in the SKY.

From countless concerts in New England backin teh 1970’s and 80’s,to listening to you on FM, 8-track, cassette, CD and DVD, you were always GREAT! When you released Dark Side of The Moon, we made a tribute to Pink Floyd at th Milford Quarries in Milford,MA while listening to your band from the loadspeakers of a van, parked along the waters edge.
We will all miss you and look forward to seeing you again one day on the Dark Side of The Moon…

“GOOD BYE MY GREAT GIG IN THE SKY”

September 18th, 2008 at 2:54 amThere’s too many sad days! I loved Pink Floyd for over 40 years and Richard was always there. I can’t believe he’s gone. It feels as if I knew him personally, but I didn’t, i was one of the many fans, although we did say hello many times. My mum died in August and now Richard and its bought all kinds of memories back. I was 3 the first time I say Pink Floyd, mum took me to Pompeii.
RIP RW, you were one of the best!
Love
