Maybe it’s that I saw the second ever Jaguar Love gig, but that band of ex-Blood Brothers just didn’t wow me when I stumbled upon them opening for New Young Pony Club last October. However, it was quite the opposite when I caught another fraction of ex-Blood Brother this weekend at Situations in the form of Past Lives.
Venturing outside of Seattle for the first time ever as a band, Past Lives have got it down pat with a mixture of dancable melodic noise punk that isn’t contrived in the least. The foursome took the stage a little after midnight if taking the stage can extend to the fact that the two guitarists were up on Dunes’ white speaker while drummer Mark Gajadhar and frontman Jordan Blilie stood front and center on the floor. Through a thick cloud of fog (that made it impossible for them to see each other at times) they played a pretty powerful set; one not without intermittent commentary about Rock of Love with Situations host Nathan Howdeshell aka everyone’s favorite Gossip guitarist Brace Paine between songs.
