The Associated Press just announced that soul giant Isaac Hayes has been found dead alongside a treadmill at his home in Memphis. He was 65. RIP. It’s ironic that Hayes’ web site has a picture of him and his friend Bernie Mac who also died on Saturday. Hayes just recently played the Portland Blues Festival.

@Dave–props for running this obit. Hayes was MASSIVE. He wrote Soul Man for Sam & Dave and was there when R&B was born. Even at his corniest (and fun) disco-fied moments he never phoned it in. Ever see WATTSTAX? This was “the black Woodstock” concert film which featured a lot of bands and talent (including Richard Pryor and a more “radical” Jesse Jackson) but Hayes absolutely stole the show. Great movie…
August 10th, 2008 at 6:34 pmRIP Isaac. I was out of town (PDX) during the Blues Festival weekend and missed it. I thought it very strange to have Mr Hayes, aka Chef, headlining a Blues Festival. Did anyone happen to see the show?
