Weezer Hootenanny in Portland, exclusive video from Dave Allen on Vimeo.
Portland’s local alternative radio station, KNRK 94.7, hosted Weezer’s Hootenanny at Oaks Park fairground. The station put out the call for 200 local musicians to turn up and perform with Weezer and be part of a live radio broadcast as well as be included on a limited edition CD that Weezer will compile from their west coast hootenanny jaunt. I was able to get in early and watch as Weezer worked with all the various musicians as they rehearsed the songs. This is the first in a series of videos that I will post as I have a load of footage.

I think Weezer may have just officially over-saturated use of the word ‘hootenanny’. I might need to borrow RC’s thesaurus before my next post now…
June 20th, 2008 at 7:28 amyeah, personally i think they could have mixed it up a bit with the wording… “shindig” or “hoedown” come to mind. If that’s the oaks park ballroom/wedding reception area, i can’t even begin to imagine the sound… nay… the sheer force, of 200 guitars in that big wooden space.
June 20th, 2008 at 9:44 amI think that HOOTenanny is an oblique reference to the line in their new single “Pork and Beans” where Rivers says “I don’t give a HOOT about what you think.”
June 20th, 2008 at 10:40 amOld school Weezer fans will remember the days of small school auditorium Weezer shows, unplugged sets, and intimate moments with the band…yes…even AFTER the release of the ‘Blue Album’. This was Weezer’s style. They didn’t do huge arena shows or have stupid songs about wanting to live in Beverly Hills, etc…So now, here we are and have seemingly come full circle with this cute little gathering. A desperate grasp for the old days or a silly marketing / PR thing? I’m gonna go with silly PR thing. We get it, but it’s too late. You’ve gone down that road. Call it selling out, call it a lack of artistic integrity, call it whatever you want. It’s all usually a perception thing anyway. But to me, it’s goofball tactics to sell records. It used to be a genuine desire to bond with fans and just play good music…I said “GOOD” music. But they ended up all playing a cover of Radiohead’s ‘Creep’….wtf?
The last thing I MUST comment on: what’s with the guitar wielding douchebags who seem to be attempting to look like the current Rivers. (little mustache, second-hand-western’esque-retro-rock thing) There’s like 3 (probably more) of them in the crowd….wow. So the second you saw the new Rivers look you just had to imitate it? That’s just laughable. Rivers looks like a doofus and so do you.
