Starting today, Rhapsody launches a new DRM-free, MP3 downloading service and they’ve also partnered with iLike, MTV Networks and Yahoo. The new service obviously challenges Apple’s iTunes service as Apple sticks to its allegiance to DRM on behalf of the record companies. And given that you can preview an entire MP3 file before you buy gives it a one-up over Amazon’s MP3 download service too. And if users act fast they can get a complete album download for free – see below.
From the Rhapsody web site:
“Shopping for music online just got easier. The new Rhapsody MP3 Store lets you listen to entire songs before you buy them*, provides recommendations, and delivers high-quality MP3s that can be played on your iPod or any other MP3 player. If you’re one of the first 100,000 to create an account by Independence Day, we’ll automatically apply a $10 credit to your first album purchase. The credit must be used by midnight Pacific time, July 4, 2008 – so sign up and start shopping today. Limit one per household.”

When I signed up it said I’d get 25 full-length song plays for free. The moment I attempted to take advantage of the first one, it said I’d already used all 25. I hope something similar doesn’t happen with the $10.
