“EMI Records is offering a set of all of the band’s past studio albums and one live album in a number of formats, including uncompressed WAV files on a custom Radiohead Bear USB drive.” for only $167…..! Weird. If you own the CDs already you’ve essentially already got WAV files.
Thanks to Nick and Gizmodo for this one.

reminds me of the old days when VhS tapes where like 90 bucks. Hey so I wonder if Radiohead has any say in the new promotion?
November 6th, 2007 at 3:30 pmThey must, that’s their images right there….
November 6th, 2007 at 4:01 pmlove the usb drives. pretty much throws the construct of the album out the window. now instead of cd duplication bands need usb drive distribution? this is a weird time :)
November 6th, 2007 at 10:10 pmI like the USB drives…dont scratch…but what is the life span of something like that . Are the inner components of a USB drive subject to some shorter than normal life span?
November 7th, 2007 at 7:02 ambut guys, the price? And as I said if you own the albums you make your own wav files for free and stick ‘em on usb drives..

I should get an award for being smart…it definitely looked a little odd that this would piggy back their release of in rainbows.
November 7th, 2007 at 9:46 amI seriously couldn’t stop laughing when I first read that article…and what a clunky way to distribute it…they could have been a bit more 21st century and at least put it on a mini SD chip or something.
My question is: Are these files being sold DRM free? If so, does that mean that the industry is implying in this instance that DRM/copy protection isn’t necessary? Further, by implying that DRM isn’t needed for these files, are they encouraging people to share and trade them? Hmm….
November 7th, 2007 at 10:45 ameven if you don’t have these cds you could pick them up for 10 bucks at a used cd store. lets see. 7 albums, about 10 dollars each, multiply times 7, crunch the numbers…….comes out to about 70. so, how are the usb drives worth 93 dollars?
November 7th, 2007 at 11:25 amI like this idea. The USB drive is unique. Downloading all of those wav files wouldn’t be a trivially short process – probably over 1 GB? Easier to just get the thumb drive in the mail. They probably aren’t planning to sell tons of them, and obviously not to the penny pinchers who are going hunt down the cds in a used record store and buy used cds and then rip them all. Or just steal them from a friend. You can’t criticize artists for years for suing their fans and terrible DRM and then criticize them when they offer a way to get their entire catalog in unprotected digital for less than 200 bucks.
November 7th, 2007 at 12:21 pmi guess in the label’s mind each album is worth 16-20 which makes more sense with the 163 amount.
i totally get the coolness of this usb package, and i know how nice it would be to have all those .wav files ready to go. for the target niche audience its great. the label just might get more value in PR than actual sales of these.
November 7th, 2007 at 3:58 pmThe point is that the industry is doing all of this too little, too late. They had the opportunity to do a lot of this at least as far back as 1997, but chose instead to sue the shit out of anyone and everyone they could while making a huge stink with the rest of the media. This most recent attempt at making nice seems to me to merely add insult to injury…

November 13th, 2007 at 11:32 pmBMI is trying to get the last bit of money out of radiohead since they just left them. Evidently this promotion was not in any way approved by radiohead but an attempt to capitalize on radiohead’s current buzz by their former label.
