Gregg Gillis, known to the world as Girl Talk, is more than a master manipulator, masher, DJ or producer..he’s a performance artist. Backstage at the Roseland in Portland he was suiting up with a grey hoodie, dark glasses and stuffing rose petals down his pants. Meanwhile the restless 1500+ crowd was pretty much screaming its collective head off. Gillis stepped out of the wings, the crowd went nuts and he started out by lecturing the security staff and then jumped down into the mosh pit. He was instantly swallowed up and suddenly the crowd is the show! No stage required, no hip hop posturing with folded arms, just damned fine mixes and the energy from the audience – this is punk….. Because the stage was empty I was able to grab a ton of well lit footage so there’s a couple here and the rest will be up on YouTube real soon. Big question. Why didn’t Girl Talk headline this festival? Here’s the video. Girl Talk meets the audience. And here’s a video of the last cut of the night.

It was a damn fine set. I’ll have to admit that I wish the show had been 21+. I’m sad that I missed his show at Holocene last fall.

September 10th, 2007 at 9:55 amOh man, I see myself for the majority of that first video. Awesome stuff, great time, Girl Talk is the best. Crazy, crazy show. Had to bail at the end though because it was 1,000 degrees and I had to get to the Thermals (strangely) but it was a great time. Were you the person who had the KEXP sticker on your camera?
September 10th, 2007 at 10:07 amI was the guy with blue t-shirt on and the non-professional looking digital camera. It’s my secret weapon though, takes great video and records great sound…
September 10th, 2007 at 11:12 amGotcha! I somehow got a picture with you in it and I think I actually tried to get you to take a picture from up there for me. I could not get any good shots with the dance party being as crazy as it was. Awesome videos though, great time at that show. Keep up the great work.
September 10th, 2007 at 3:16 pmThanks for the props..and I’ll post whatever pics I can to my Flickr site
September 10th, 2007 at 3:50 pmGregg began his show at Holocene last year by walking to the front the stage grabbing a glass out of somebody’s hand and smashing it to his face; it was then that I knew this was going to be a special show. 45 minutes later wearing only his boxers he emerged from the thrashing throng that had surrounded him on stage. Needless to say, Saturday night was another frenzied scene of which I enjoyed every minute apart from the the 30 seconds I spent feeling around for my glasses on the Roseland’s floor while the crush of manic 16 year olds trampled me from above. Despite being severely mangled, the glasses survived much better than the pair I lost in the mob at a Toadies show when I was myself an excitable 16 year old. Great footage Dave, thanks.
September 10th, 2007 at 4:53 pmBest fucking show

i was there all night thanks for partying so hard portland it was amazing
Yeah it’s great that the 16 year old’s can get in. All we need now is for the OLCC to drop the ridiculous rule that 21+ drinkers must never mingle with under 21 non-drinkers. Every band that plays the Crystal has something to say about the parting of the audience. The Roseland meanwhile forces 21+ patrons to stand in a huge line to get ID’s checked before herding them into the hottest and smallest bar in Portland, and about as far away from the band as humanly possible…..it’s nuts.

November 16th, 2007 at 10:32 am[...] Ok, so when Nilina comes by the shop we get to talking because Nilina is full of life and crackles with enthusiasm. She loved the Nemo Design space so much she’s coming back. Anyway, we sat down and shared musical notes..I was happy to push Dubstep and in particular Burial on to her. She came back with Easter Egg who is a Portland-based musician/DJ who’s MySpace site lists his ‘band members’ as – “Me, being Nathan, my MacBook that I try to keep clean and white, a legit copy of Ableton Live that I barely know how to use, and the assistance of whoever I feel like sampling.” He’s hot on the heels of Girl Talk< ,/a>. He just got props from Ratatat for the remix he did of Cherry. [Nilina also turned me on to some cool Metronomy tracks, more on them later.] [...]
