[...] Everything these days has to have green or a sustainable connection to it so of course the internet has gone green too with the latest Yahoo! website green.yahoo.com In it’s list of the top ten sustainable cities Portland ranks #1 so Portland Prius owners can rejoice, with the exception being the speeding Prius owners I wrote about in my post I’m Sick of the Co-opting of Green. I think the American public are getting confused about just what “green” and “sustainability” mean. If they connect the dots and realize that it is really about protecting the Earth’s resources then the only genuine solution is to significantly reduce one’s consumption of goods and resources. Unfortunately, buying more goods because they are labeled organic, green or harvested from sustainable sources just adds to the problem; we must reduce consumption. Therefore do not buy a Prius and feel good about it, buy a bicycle, a used car or buy a bus pass instead. And environmentalists should perhaps consider re-wilding. Let’s consider sustainable resources, clothing and the Portland outdoor clothing company Nau. On their web site they say they asked themselves the question - “Does the world really need another outdoor clothing company? Not surprisingly the short answer was “no.” What did they do? They started another outdoor clothing company. If they really believed and lived true to their philosophy and their mission statement they would have opened an outdoor clothing recycling company instead of opening a new business that uses more of the world’s resources. Just as fat-free cookies did nothing to halt the rise in the number of obese people in the USA, buying more green, organic or sustainable products will not save anything. So, Portland can pat it’s self on the back for being number 1 but we need to be more aware that less truly means more when it comes to our natural resources here on the globe….
[...] So after rattling on about Toyota Prius drivers gunning their cars past me, [I’m sick of the co-opting of green] and Live Earth the concerts that didn’t appear to help anything let alone Earth, [Live Earth is a win for global yawning..] I now turn my attention to that ubiquitous accessory - the water bottle. I was going to bring up the “why can’t people just drink water from the faucet?” argument a while ago but I let it lie then I read Water, water everywhere, but guilt by the bottleful and it got me going again.
Maybe Portlanders are more green conscious than most, in fact I'm confident of that but we all need to think about our consumption. As Trevor Graves from <a href="http://www.nemodesign.com"target=_new rel="nofollow">Nemo Design</a> said to me as we were discussing Portland-based Nau, a sportswear clothing company that touts its environmentally conscious approach - "How can a clothing company be environmentally conscious if it is designing and manufacturing new clothing. If it were truly revolutionary and honest then the best thing it could do is encourage recycling. For instance, need a snowboarding jacket? Then go get one from Goodwill. When you're done with it donate it back for someone else to use...."

Thank you for posting this Dave, it's so true! I write about green trends all the time and I'm tired of them becoming a fashion statement or used as some sort of elitist status -- green building is still limited to the wealthy (for the most part). The best way to build green is to reuse and old building! Not construct a new mansion in the hills, throw in some bamboo floors and energy efficient appliances and then brag about your greenness. The best, best, best thing is to just stop buying so much! Well, that and cut the world's population in half ... ;)

yea I like that quote most of all. hybrids aren't good enough if a better power source can be put into production or certain cultural habits could be changed (like riding a bike or bus) just as recycling isn't good enough when we could eliminate alot of packaging by changing our own consumption patterns. we have to stop overproducing and overconsuming if we want history to see us as globally conscious. unfortunately the way we view the harbringers of the industrial revolution as nearsighted is exactly how I fear the more critical people of the future will view us.
