Ian Curtis as portrayed by Sam Riley
Critics at this year’s Cannes Film Festival are apparently giving the two thumbs up to famed photographer, Anton Corbijn’s first movie, a bio pic about the last days of Joy Division singer, Ian Curtis. Here’s the story from The BBC and here’s some pictures from the set on the Joy Division fan site. The film stars newcomer Sam Riley and Samantha Morton.

drama in the new order camp. peter hook has some issues with anton’s “control”. regardless i can’t wait to see it! josh k
“The problem is that he’s telling us what to do,” Hook says in a Gigwise.com article. “If we don’t tell him how to direct, why is he telling us how to make music? Bernard [Sumner] and Stephen [Morris] seem to be OK about it, but it bothers me a lot.”

May 17th, 2007 at 9:18 pmwhat is up with you bass players?
May 17th, 2007 at 10:48 pmit’s because we have an over-inflated idea of our self-importance, or something like that……!
May 18th, 2007 at 7:53 amI for one, as a bass player, have always been amused by Hook’s antics. I like his lead guitar-damaged bass lines in New Order, and am REALLY amused by the side project singles. Pineapple Face? Hilarious. Revenge wasn’t as good as Monaco, but then again, Monaco was sort of New Order, Jr.
I am cantankerous as a bassist because, like Frank Zappa, I still look at my hands when playing even after years of flogging away. This gives me crappy posture, which in turn makes me look like some kind of mad hunchback. This leads to…well, you get the picture. Dunno if that explains bassists in general but it certainly works for ME. Anybody who spends 90 minutes per show staring at their hands while trying not to sweat all over their fretboard is bound to be a tad snarky. Those lead guitar players have it easier. Just crank it up to 11, jump around a lot, and go for lots of feedback if you start buggering up the solo.
heh.
May 18th, 2007 at 7:58 amJoe you’re getting all self-deprecating and shit! Where’s the self-importance in a mad hunchback pose…..!!!? I’m glad I don’t look at my hands as I tend to focus on which roadie is stealing my beer…
May 18th, 2007 at 8:11 amEvidence that what Dave is saying about the beer thing is completely true.
